Over the past couple of days, we saw hundreds of pictures of the Met Gala, that took place at the Met on May 2nd, all over the internet showing all of the different looks the guests were flaunting. In consequence, I decided to explain a little bit what exactly the event is and share with you my personal favorite outfits and makeup looks!
WHAT IT IS:
The Met Gala (also called Met Ball) is a fundraising gala to the benefit of the Costume Institue of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The institute houses a colossal collection of over 35,000 costumes and accessories all coming from different countries and various eras.¹ It is sheltered by the Anna Winter Costume Center, a wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
THIS YEARS THEME:
Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology
What it means? From how I understood it, they wanted to make a parallel between handmade haute couture (unique pieces) and machine-made prêt-à-porter (mass production), and show how nowadays both tend to blend together to form creative and uncommon pieces. Although, an explanation by Andrew Bolton, curator of the institute, will probably be more appropriate:
“Traditionally, the distinction between the haute couture and prêt-à-porter was based on the handmade and the machine-made, but recently this distinction has become increasingly blurred as both disciplines have embraced the practices and techniques of the other.” -Andrew Bolton
Therefore the show featured fashion pieces that were both hand made and machine made and the exhibition had several workshops related to this years theme such as 3d printing.
Each year, the guests come up with different clever and brilliant ways to represent the theme through their wardrobe and all of the different looks end up all over the internet the morning after. Hence I decided to do the same, so here are my choices the best dressed. Hear me out here, it was quite hard to judge the looks since this years theme brought many aspects to the dress code. The guests had an incentive to be more creative and extravagant than on previous years. Accordingly, some looks were admirable for how daring they were, while others I liked more because of the simplicity or elegance. At first, I planned on cutting the selection down to five but considering all the different styles and textures, it was nearly impossible. There was just too many good looks, so I had to go with more. Check them out bellow, click on the pictures to expand them and for a description.
Hope you enjoyed this post. Tell me what you though about the different looks in the comments!
